Parco del castello reale di Racconigi

History

The castle's park is a place of great charm, enhancing the architecture of the palace. It bears witness to the ability and skill of the architects who designed it and the gardeners who worked here. The park has taken on different appearances over the course of the centuries of history of the Carignano princes' castle.
At the end of the 17th century, to the north of the palace stretched the harmonious and geometrically rigorous garden designed by Le Nôtre, the famous French architect responsible for the gardens at Versailles. A century later Giuseppina di Lorena, the Princess of Carignano, entrusted to Giacomo Pregliasco the transformation of a part of the park into a "English-style" garden. Giuseppina's garden abandoned Le Nôtre's ordered geometric patterns and instead offered a stirring walk through seemingly wild nature, which was actually carefully designed by the landscape designer. In around the 1820s and 1830s, the green space was expanded and profoundly transformed. In Carlo Alberto's English-style park, created by German gardener Xavier Kurten, a romantic atmosphere, typical of 19th-century landscape design, was created by the winding paths, large expanses of lawn, forested groves, curving lake with a small island, little bridges, ruins, grotto, picturesque structures and changing views.
Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the park was used mostly as an agricultural estate and the gardens were neglected, but it was especially during the Second World War and in the post-war period that a lack of maintenance caused a progressive degeneration. The park today has been restored to Kurten's 19th-century design.
