History
Among the wondrous leisurely residences, where His Royal Highness the Duke of Savoy retreats to find some rest, the most important, the one truly deserving a visit, is the one known as Venaria Reale, three miles out of Turin. It was Duke Carlo Emanuele II who gave it this name, in the firm belief that this estate would make a hunting ground suitable to a sovereign.
This is the incipit of Theatrum Sabaudiae, a monumental collection of 142 engravings intended to celebrate the splendor of the Savoy domains and residences. The tone of this propaganda was intended to create a theatrical effect to surprise Europe's powerful rulers and to bear witness to the glory of a dynasty rising from Ducal to Royal status.
La Venaria Reale is one of the finest examples of the majesty of 17th and 18th century architecture.

The monumental palace, that covers an overall surface of over 80,000 square meters, is a celebration of universal baroque: the enchanting scenario of the Hall of Diana designed by Amedeo di Castellamonte, the solemnity of the Great Gallery and the Church of St. Hubert, the grandiose complex of the Juvarra Stables designed by Filippo Juvarra in the 18th century, the sumptuous decorations and the imaginative installations by Peter Greenaway on life at court are the ideal setting for the Theatre of History and Magnificence, the permanent display devoted to the House of Savoy that takes our visitors on a tour that extends over almost 2 km, from the underground level to the piano nobile of the Reggia.
